Upgrading is necessary to make a product compatible with conventional
fossil fuels.
Quality improvement through use of emulsions and hot vapour filtration
(Figure below) are seen as a means of reducing cost and lowering the
emissions in utilisation.
Pyrolysis oil is affected by the presence of char in the product,
which is too small to be collected in the cyclones and accumulates
in the liquid. This can be removed by hot vapour filtration.
A second upgrading option is considered in the project, based on the
production of emulsions between PO and conventional fossil fuel, in
order to have a fuel more suitable to be used in unmodified - or with
minor modifications - equipment for energy conversion.
